The spring of 2024 was the first time I spent Ramadan in my father's home country, Indonesia. Although seen as a month-long holiday of extended fasting, the food always remained the main point of interest for me. During the holy month of Ramadan, the streets of Bandung, Indonesia, are calm throughout the day. Still, as the sun sets, kaki limas (street carts) are pushed around the street in preparation for the large crowds of people looking for food after a long day of fasting. As it gets closer to sunset, the traffic takes over the streets as people on motorscooters race home for their final prayer before breaking fast; finally, as the last bit of light disappears from the evening sky, the streets come to life. The smell of hot flames fueled by keroscene fills the air, the sound of hot oil popping and meat sizzling on the grill consumes the mind, and as you walk down the street, food is the only thing that consumes your mind.
